Heat Pumps

Air Conditioning services (GB) Ltd. has been installing heat pumps for many years, and is our core business. Heat pumps can be seen every day in retail outlets and petrol stations.
They consist of an indoor unit , which deliverers hot or cold air into the space to be "Conditioned" and an  outdoor unit , which normally contains the compressor, and either ejects heat to the outside or absorbers heat from the outside. This type of Heat Pump is particularly suited to conservatories or a bedroom.

Air to Water Heat Pumps

These type of Heat Pumps are the newest type. They work in exactly the same way as Air to Air, but instead of heating the air directly, water is heated.
This is the same as in a typical home heating system. Water is heated by a gas boiler which in is circulated through pipes to heat emitters around the home.
There are two types of Air to Water Heat Pumps.
Ground source and Air source.
Ground source absorbers heat from the ground, and Air source absorbers heat form the air.
With Air Source being the cheapest and easiest to install , as there are no large holes in the ground to be dug. You do however need to install an outdoor unit, to collect the heat from the air.
With Ground source heat pumps , you will need to have either a trench , or bore hole dug, to allow the heat collecting pipes to be installed under ground. This is more expensive, and allot more disruptive to install. You also need quite a large area of ground, to enable the spread of the heat collector pipes.

How do heat pumps work?

A heat pump only needs a heat source (the outside air), two heat exchangers (one to absorb and another one to release heat) and a relatively small amount of drive energy to keep the system going.  A heat pump extracts thermal energy from the environment.  In the case of Daikin Altherma the source is the outside air. The pump extracts the energy at a certain temperature, increases that temperature and then releases it into a medium which in the Daikin Altherma system is the water running to your low temperature radiators, under floor heating system or fan coil units. Between those two media the heat is moved by means of a working fluid.

Compressor - the essence of heat pumps.

As the working fluid passes through the evaporator and extracts heat from the air, it turns into a gas. This is where the compressor comes in. When you compress a gas the temperature rises. (for example if you inflate the tyre of your bicycle, you can feel the air inside warming up through the rubber).  Inside your house the second heat exchange takes place when the compressed gas enters the condenser, a surface which is colder than the gas itself. Finally, the gas condenses and releases its heat – this heat then warms up your house.
